The authority of the South African automotive components industry

There are some 125 national NAACAM member companies with approximately 220 regional manufacturing sites, in addition to 23 associate members who provide a wide range of services to members.

Amongst NAACAM manufacturing members, about 100 supply to the OEMs (for car assembly operations as well as for the OEM aftermarket needs) and to the independent aftermarket. The balance are Tier 2 and Tier 3 suppliers.

Almost 70% of South African main Tier 1 manufacturers are NAACAM members, while outside of NAACAM there are some foreign and smaller local companies who are either not members of any association or are affiliated to tyres, plastics, stainless steel, aluminium and similar bodies.

Employment
The estimated employment of the component manufacturing sector at the end of 2015 was 82,100, down just over 1% from 2014. This figure is made up as follows:

NAACAM members 48,200 (in 2014: 49,300)
Tyre manufacturers 5,600 (in 2014: 5,400)
Catalytic converters 3,800 (in 2014: 4,000)
Not affiliated (but primarily Tier 2 & 3 automotive suppliers) 24,500 (this estimate is based on figures provided by a recent Study on the Retention & Creation of employment in the South African Automotive Manufacturing Industry).

Turnover
NAACAM members’ annual sales for 2015 was an estimated R52 billion, a 4% increase on 2014.  The split of net sales by category would be distorted by the high value of precious metals in the exports of catalytic converters, which comprise over 50% of total component exports. Excluding the precious metal exports, the split of turnover was:

Sales to Vehicle Assemblers - for assembly 51%
Aftermarket sales (including to OEMs) 18%
Export Sales 31%

For 2015, the total turnover of the entire component manu-facturing sector, including duplication sales, is estimated at R82 billion.

Capital Expenditure
NAACAM members’ capital investment in 2015 is estimated at R2.1 billion (2014: R1.9 billion) and total component industry capital expenditure is estimated at R2.7 billion (2014: R2.7 billion).

Local Content
The average local content of the components produced in South Africa is estimated at below 60%, with those being exported averaging over 70%.

However, the net value of local components used in vehicles is significantly lower, less than 40% of the total component value. One of the objectives of the APDP is to encourage localisation.
